Here is a old letter from the USFS
Date: February 13, 2008
Dear Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forest Visitor,
The United States Forest Service, Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest proposes building a rock crawl challenge course in the Cold Creek rock pit located at the back of the existing Cold Creek Snow Park (see attached map).
Rock crawling as defined by Wikipedia “is an extreme form of off road driving using vehicles anywhere from stock to highly modified to overcome obstacles. In rockcrawling, drivers drive highly modified four-wheel-drive vehicles such as trucks, Jeeps, and “buggies” over very harsh terrain. Driving locations include boulders, mountain foothills, rock piles, mountain trails, etc. Rockcrawling is about slow-speed, careful and precise driving.”
The course would provide a place for OHV enthusiast to hone their off-road driving skills in an area designated and managed for this activity, and help re-direct use away from other resource sensitive areas on the district. The proposed challenge course also would provide a central place for ORV Rangers and Sheriffs to contact the public and convey the tread lightly message. The course would cover approximately 1.5 acres of previously disturbed ground. Large boulders would be placed in a pattern to simulate driving a trail. The course would include built terrain features with varying degrees of difficulty ranging from beginner to expert. A kiosk would be installed near the entrance to the rock crawl coarse to post educational information on. The Forest Service proposes to treat the area for noxious weed prevention and control using integrated weed management.
In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), an environmental analysis is being prepared for the project. The document will summarize the project purpose and need and will analyze the potential effects of the project on the built and natural environment. Technical studies will be conducted to gather necessary data for the Forest Service to make an informed decision. We intend on completing the analysis and signing a decision by June 30,2008.
We are interested to learn of any issues, concerns or comments you may have relative to this project. Please contact Barry Collins at the Naches Ranger Station (509)653-1427, or mail correspondence to the above address. We would be happy to meet with you weekdays at the Ranger Station, Please call for an appointment. Comments received by March 13, 2008 would be of most value to the current planning effort.
Sincerely,
RANDALL D. SHEPARD
District Ranger
